Fly Fishing in Dullstroom

A private base for your fishing weekend

Dullstroom's trout-fishing culture draws both experienced anglers and visitors trying fly fishing for the first time. The Trout and Butterfly gives your group a private place to stay together before and after a day on the water.

Why Dullstroom for a fly-fishing weekend?

The town is widely associated with trout fishing and the highland landscape. Visitors can choose from different types of water and fishing experiences in the wider area, but availability and access vary by venue, season, weather and booking arrangements.

A good weekend begins with honest planning. Confirm where you are fishing, whether the water is suitable for your experience level, what is included, and which rules apply before you travel.

How to plan your fishing access

  • Choose a verified fishing venue or provider and confirm availability before booking the accommodation.
  • Ask about permits, catch-and-release rules, bag limits, fishing methods and the experience level required.
  • Confirm whether rods, waders, boots or instruction can be hired or arranged.
  • Check the weather and venue conditions shortly before departure.
  • Carry the correct licence, booking confirmation or access information required by the venue.

Accommodation for fishing groups

The Trout and Butterfly is reserved for one group, so anglers can share the house without mixing with unrelated guests. The kitchen supports early breakfasts and packed lunches, while the living areas, fireplace and braai make it easy to regroup in the evening.

The house sleeps up to 8 adults and 2 children, which also suits mixed groups where not everyone intends to fish. Non-anglers can explore Dullstroom, enjoy a slower day or choose another local activity.

What to bring

  • Layered clothing for changing highland weather
  • Waterproof jacket and sun protection
  • Appropriate boots or waders for the booked water
  • Personal fishing equipment where required
  • Warm clothing for early mornings and evenings
  • Drinking water, food and any venue-specific supplies

Fish responsibly

Follow the rules of the water you are visiting and treat fish, habitat and other anglers with care. Use appropriate tackle, minimise handling, wet your hands before touching a fish, and release it carefully when catch-and-release rules apply.

Do not enter private waters without permission and do not assume that every dam or stream visible around Dullstroom is open to visitors.
