Altitude Training in Dullstroom
A private base for runners and cyclists
Dullstroom sits at around 2,100 metres above sea level, making the area interesting to runners, cyclists and small groups planning short training blocks in a high-altitude environment.

The Trout and Butterfly provides accommodation, self-catering control and shared space. It does not provide coaching, sports science, medical supervision or specialist recovery facilities.

Running weekends
A short running stay can combine easy mileage, one planned quality session, trail time and recovery. Choose routes carefully, consider traffic and visibility, and avoid unfamiliar roads in poor weather or darkness.
The private house supports an organised group rhythm without requiring everyone to follow the same pace or session.

Cycling blocks
Road, gravel and mountain-bike groups can use Dullstroom as a highland base, but route conditions and access must be checked. Plan mechanical support, visibility, hydration and transport before the ride.

Self-catering control
A private kitchen allows the group to manage breakfast, training fuel, recovery meals and dietary preferences without depending entirely on restaurant opening times.
Guests remain responsible for their own nutrition plan and any specialist dietary requirements.

The house as your base
Quiet evenings and shared routine
Training groups often value early nights, simple meals and clear routines. The living areas, fireplace and dining spaces give everyone room to regroup, review the day and prepare for the next session.
The house is also suitable for mixed groups where some visitors train and others explore Dullstroom at a slower pace.

Good to know before you train
Understanding the altitude
Training at altitude affects people differently. Some visitors feel the change immediately, while others notice it during harder efforts or recovery. The response depends on individual health, fitness, acclimatisation, training history and the length of the stay.
Use a qualified coach or medical professional for personal guidance. Do not treat a Dullstroom weekend as a guaranteed performance intervention.
Health and safety
Guests should adjust training to their own condition, weather and altitude response. Anyone with a medical concern should seek professional advice before strenuous exercise at altitude.
The Trout and Butterfly is responsible for accommodation only and does not supervise training sessions or routes.
